Welcome to Milton

MILTON, voted 2nd BEST PLACE TO LIVE (Money Magazine, 2011) is located just 8 miles south of Boston and all the history, shopping, restaurants and cultural events it has to offer. The community, borders 7,000 acres of conservation land called the Blue Hills as well as the Neponset River with water access to Boston Harbor through the Neponset Estuary. The town has a rich and vibrant history and continues to thrive as an affluent suburb of Boston. The town has a varied demographic which makes it a very interesting place to live.

The magazine cited Milton's tree lined streets, proximity to Boston, stable home prices, and its school system. "Milton is just minutes from the jobs and culture of Boston but feels in places like a country getaway,'' the magazine wrote. "One major reason for this stability is the outstanding school system, which boasts six brand-new buildings and offers such rich opportunities as a French immersion program that begins in elementary school. The downside: high taxes.'' Town Administrator Kevin J. Mearn was proud to share the news this morning. "And while", he said, "None of the town's 27,000 residents like having to pay higher taxes to sustain town services, residents appreciate what they have and do what they must to sustain it. Because of that, folks in town enjoy higher property values", he said.

Great Blue Hill in the Blue Hills Reservation is the highest point in Norfolk County, and at 635 feet (194 m), is the highest point within 10 miles of the Atlantic coast south of central Maine, making it an important weather observatory and radio and television transmitter site - the well-known Boston public television and radio station WGBH takes its call letters from Great Blue Hill, the original location of the station's FM and TV transmitters. Jim and his wife enjoy hiking its splendid trails and taking in the panoramic views of the metropolitan area. There is also alpine skiing available at Blue Hills Ski Area, consisting of eight trails served by a double chair and two surface lifts. Great Blue Hill is also home to the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, the foremost structure associated with the history of weather observations in the United States.


If you have school-age children, you will want to read this information letter outlining school bus transportation eligibility and fees! Here is the schedule/routes for buses for 2011. Milton's 4 elementary public schools feed into its middle and high schools. Complete school district information is obtainable here. There are private high schools and elementary/middle schools available, including Fontbonne Academy, St. Mary of the Hills, St. Agatha's, Thacher Montessori, and Delphi Academy. Milton is also home to the prep school Milton Academy, and Curry College, a small liberal arts institution.

Milton is a prime choice for those who commute into the city along I-95 or via public transit. It has access to Boston via the commuter rail or bus with 4 stops in Milton: Milton, Central Avenue, Valley Road, and Capen Street. Locally, you might enjoy cycling. The opening of the Neponset River Greenway reconnected Milton with Boston Harbor via Port Norfolk, Dorchester. Other cycling routes and locations include Turner's Pond, Brook Road, Blue Hills Parkway, Milton Cemetery, and the Pine Tree Brook greenway.

The town consists of three nominal areas: Milton, Milton Center, and East Milton; however, REALTORS break the town out into four areas: Blue Hills, East Milton, Milton Center, and Milton Hill. 2010 - 205 sales. List Price - $566,848 Sale Price - $545,404   Market Time - 107 days

Milton sales grew 10% in 2011, but at a cost with buyers taking advantage of lower prices compared to 2010. 2012 saw a cheerier face with sales continuing to grow an additional 10% as well as modest gains in value - back to 2010 levels. There was no change in time on market.

There were just a couple of more sales of condominiums in 2011 over 2010, but overall values of those that did sell soared 17%! Sadly, for sellers, the volume of sales and the average sale price of those that did sell both fell about 10%. Now's the time for buyers to buy a condo in Milton!

Multi-family sales in Milton tumbled some in 2011; and so did values - by about 6.3%; however, those losses were recouped in 2012.
